Your ABS (anti-lock braking system) is what prevents your vehicle's wheels from locking up whilst hard braking. It gives you control of the car and prevents skidding.
When you brake hard, the sensors in each wheel sends a signal to the engine control unit (ECU) that the wheels could lock and skid. Then, the ECU releases the brakes on the wheels, keeping you in control of the vehicle and preventing them from locking.
The ABS system will self-test every time you turn on the ignition. If the ABS light stays on after this period, then there is a problem within the car's ABS system. You should get the vehicle to a professional garage quickly. The ABS system is a vital safety feature which you could need at any point. Bring it to South Coast Garage and we will run diagnostic tests to identify the issue and get it fixed efficiently.
If both the ABS light and the brake system light remain on at the same time, your vehicle should not be driven. You have a serious problem with the braking system. Stop in a safe place, and give us a call to recover your vehicle.
There could be a number of reasons the ABS light is on. It could be that your brake fluid is too low. This can be fixed yourself by topping up your brake fluid at home. Or it could be a more serious issue such as the wheel sensor being damaged, or a loss of pressure in the braking system which is caused by splits in the brake fluid reservoir or brake lines.
We can diagnose the issue for you and suggest the best way of repairing the issue.
