If your car's electronics have detected a problem with the engine, your engine management light will illuminate. You can find this usually behind the steering wheel.
Usually, the light uses a colour coded basis to indicate the condition of the engine. These include:
Green - The system is in use and working correctly.
Yellow - Something is not right with the engine, and it should taken to a garage to determine the issue.
Red - There is a serious and possibly dangerous issue. You should stop driving as soon as it is safe to do so and arrange recovery for your vehicle to be taken to a garage. Continuing to drive could incur expensive repairs.
The latest BMW models including the X3 series, the 3 series and the 1 series have many sensors which tracks all of the vehicle's systems.
With BMWs, the engine warning light may also be called the Engine Management Indicator or the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL). If this is illuminated, you may also notice some signalling signs that the engine is not working properly such as a lack of power and shuddering as you accelerate.
