Cambelt Replacements
What does a cambelt do?
A cambelt, or timing belt, is a vital part of the engine. It is a ribbed, rubber belt which controls the vehicle's internal combustion engines timing. It is there to make sure that the crankshaft and camshaft rotate in synchronisation.
Replacing your Cambelt
Your cambelt is going to need replacing at some point. The cambelt should be professionally checked if you have driven over 40,000 miles or had the vehicle for more than 5 years. You will likely find a recommended cambelt schedule in your vehicle manufacturer guide.
After some time, the cambelt can tear, crack or snap.
The cambelt needs replacing if you notice the following signs:
- Engine won't start
- Noise when the engine is running - hissing, squealing, rattling or rumbling.
- Noticing wear on the cambelt visually or the fact it is glossy or glazed on the underside.
Why you should replace your cambelt...
By not replacing your cambelt, you are opening yourself up to a possible mechanical failure and high repair costs.
A snapped cambelt can result in the car's timing becoming delayed. This may cause the crankshaft to collide with the cylinder head - this can cause damage that is irreversible.
