Is your ABS light on?
What is an ABS System?
Your ABS (anti-lock braking system) is what prevents your car's wheels from locking up under hard braking, so that you have control of the vehicle and do not skid.
When you brake hard, the sensors on your wheels notify the engine control unit (ECU) that the wheels may lock and skid. The ECU releases the brakes on the wheels in order to prevent them locking up and giving you full control of the vehicle.
My ABS light is on
When you turn on the ignition, the ABS system completes a self-test. If the ABS light remains on then there is a problem that has been recognised with the car's ABS system. We recommend booking in with a garage as soon as you can. It is an essential safety feature which you could need at any point. We will diagnose the issue and get it fixed quickly for you.
If both the ABS light and the brake system light remain on at the same time, your vehicle is not safe to drive. You have a severe problem with the braking system which should be looked at immediately. Give us a call and we can recover your vehicle.
What can cause an ABS fault?
Your ABS light may be on for the following reasons:
- Wheel sensor is damaged
- Brake fluid is too low
- Loss of pressure in the braking system - caused by cracks in the brake fluid reservoir or brake lines.
