When should you change your cambelt?
A cambelt is a vital part of a vehicle's engine. It is a ribbed, rubber belt which controls the timing of your vehicle's internal combustion engines. The cambelt is there to make sure the camshaft and crankshaft rotate in synchronisation.
Your cambelt is bound to need changing at some point. We would advise a professional check if you have owned your vehicle for over 5 years of have driven over 40,000 miles. Look in your vehicle manufacturer guide to see a recommended cambelt schedule.
After some time, your cambelt may tear, crack or snap. Your cambelt will need replacing when the following signs are present:
- After visually checking, the cambelt appears worn, glazed or glossy on the underside.
- Noise - a loud noise when the car is running. Usually a hissing, rattling, squealing or rumbling.
- Vehicle not starting
Do not ignore the signs!
Ignoring the signs of your cambelt requiring a replacement, can result in a mechanical failure and in turn a huge repair cost.
A cambelt which has snapped can result in the vehicle's timing becoming delayed. This can cause the crankshaft to crash into the cylinder head. This can cause irreversible damage.
